Breathing is the most important physical activity a human being can do. We can live weeks without food, days without water but only minutes without air. Breathing does more than just supply oxygen for respiration it also affects our feeling and thinking. Rebirthing-breathwork uses a connected breathing technique to energise and harmonise the body, mind and emotions.
Why Do Rebirthing?
Rebirthing is a breathing technique which helps to revitalizing the body for the purposes of healing, meditation and overall well being. People usually do rebirthing because they want to release stress, energizing the body and release the emotions that have been repressed or unexpressed. By using the connected breathing technique old memories, physical tension and feelings can be experienced and released, leaving a feeling of peace and calm. The aim of the breathing is to bring a greater level of health and relaxation in the participants life.
Usually, the rebirthing process is done with the breather lying down. The rebirther or facilitator sits next to the breather and supports them to focus, engage and relax into the breathing technique. These breathing sessions usually take from 30 to 90 minutes during a two hour consultation. The number of sessions required depends on the outcome that the rebirthing client wants to achieve, although anything from two to five sessions is normal.
What to Expect During the Rebirthing Sessions
Although every person is unique and different people experience different things, there is a general pattern that can be identified; the following process is common:
- Learning Phase -initially learning how to breath in a connected way
- Energy Building Phase – focused connected breathing resulting in vibration, tingling and possible tension
- Activation Phase – intensification of the vibration, tingling, tension
- Integration Phase – A physical, emotional and/or mental release
- Relaxation Phase – A feeling of calm and a sense of well being, often an experience of deep meditation.
The rebirthing experience is also influenced by a person’s state of physical fitness, health, mind and emotions. For the best results one should not limit the rebirth breathing session by expecting it to follow a formula.
Working with a qualified and experienced rebirthing consultant ensures that the breathing sessions are effective and insightful. The power of the breathing usually increases with experience of the breather and one’s ability to go deeper into the process usually improves with time.
According to Michael Adamedes, the consultant at Awaba Retreat, the rebirthing session does not always result with an activation phase. This may occur because the person may not be able to breathe deeply enough or their inability to “let go” into the process. Although full activation might not be achieved benefits are still achieved with the process. One is able to release tension and move towards the activation period during later sessions. The rebirth breathing session always reflects some part of your life.
Is rebirthing the same as deep breathing caused by panic or anxiety?
Although both processes involve breathing, rebirthing is not the same thing as hyperventilation. Hyperventilation occurs as the result of some deeply stressful unwanted experience such as a car accident, drug overdose or panic attack, while the process of rebirthing is done consciously, deliberately and under the control of the breather and as a consequence does not spiral into hyperventilation. The usual result of the breathing session, for the rebirthee, is a deeper experience of peace and relaxation.
Who Should Do Rebirthing Breathing?
The rebirthing breathing can be used as either a deep relaxation technique (integrative) or as an emotional release technique (cathartic).
Because of the gentle nature of integrative rebirthing, both the old and the young including children can participate in the meditative connected breathing. Integrative rebirthing is also beneficial for pregnant women and people recovering from illness. The integrative approach primarily releases stress and relaxes the body.
The cathartic form of rebirthing can be used for releasing repressed and unexpressed emotions, and becoming aware of limiting patterns of behaviour and thinking. This technique is used by many people who wish to improve their career, business, finances, relationships, sporting ability and overall physical well-being.
How Much Does It Cost?
The rebirthing breathing technique can be conducted both as a private consultation, usually over two hours and also in a class as a group experience.
Private consultations cost about the same as clinical psychologist between $190-$240/hour and group experiences from $250-$550/day depending what other services are provided.
